Free Job Hunt Help: 4 Questions to Ask a Recruiter

What’s up y'all! I am back from the dead, aka I am finally back from this terrible head cold I had all of last week. HAVE KIDS THEY SAID IT WILL BE FUN THEY SAID. Anywho, been thinking a lot about this newsletter and how to best provide value to YOU. I would love to hear from you— do you like the current newsletter format? What would you want me to add? What do you want me to take out? Pretty pumped for April I am heading to the beach next week (going to 30A, the best beach in the world) and then NYC at the end of the month for a babymoon! If you didn’t know we are expecting kid #2 on America Day, July 4th!

I got to catch up with the one and only Michael Chan who’s currently navigating the post layoff life and using content to amp up and share his journey. What better person to talk to, right? You can catch our whole convo here (recommended). There’s a lot of great back and forth about the increasing popularity of “I’m looking for a job” content and what it can do to accelerate your own search. Plus a little bit about content strategy because why not.

That whole conversation just reminded me, though, that we haven’t really talked about recruiters in a bit… well more-so what recruiters can do for you. Yeah, believe it or not recruiters can actually do more than just spam up your LinkedIn inbox. Alright— so if you’re on the job hunt or just want to make sure you’re on top of things, here’s 4 questions you should be asking recruiters to get free advice:

  1. How does my resume look?

    • Few people see more resumes than a recruiter, and they definitely see the most successful ones.

  2. How could my LinkedIn be better?

    • Most LinkedIn issues are an easy fix. Noticing the problems however…

  3. How does my desired salary & skill set align with the current market?

    • Before you go off over or under selling yourself, find out the baseline of the current market. You know who knows that best? Recruiters.

  4. What’s one skill I should work on?

    • Recruiters understand what’s making candidates stand out. Why not find out what skill could put you just a bit farther ahead?

See? Easy. Now you’ve got all this free help and some recruiters you’ve built a relationship with. Speaking of free— if you’re going to be in WI at the end of July/early August, keep on scrolling down to the deals/offers I’ve got going.

Don’t forget, you’re not alone.
