I’m always saying you should find a few recruiters and keep in touch with them, and I mean it. Recruiters are invaluable to the job search. But finding a good one can be hard. There are a lot of us out there, and a lot of us suck.

When it comes to finding a good recruiter on LinkedIn, refer to the 2 & 2 rule: if you’re gonna work with a recruiter they should have been a recruiter for 2 years, and been within their specific industry for 2 years as well.

Here are some other things to look at:

Experience: A good recruiter is meeting with people all the time. If they’re doing their job right, they should be talking to at least 3 new people per day. All of these conversations amount to experience as the years go by. If they only have a couple hundred connections, that’s not a lot in the recruiting world.

Personality: Your recruiter is someone you should be able to vibe with. How do they sell themselves? What’s their personality like? Their profile description and profile picture can tell you that.
