Productivity Mindset and How to Avoid Burnout - Issue #36
Hey friend! I am writing this from a coffee shop in Little Rock, Arkansas getting ready for my 3pm talk this afternoon! I had the chance to catch up with my good friend Colin Young, a Senior Director at EXOS. EXOS is the leader in fitness, wellness, and athletic training. I wanted to bring Colin on because there has been lots of talk lately about treating devs like athletes so he and I dive into what makes people successful in the workplace.

Productivity Mindset w/Colin Young
Quality behavior change comes from three concepts
Autonomy – feel like this is part of YOUR journey
Mastery – Has to be sustainable with a level of confidence
Purpose – clear unambiguous goals
Mindfulness / Stillness
Learn to meditate
Sitting on my porch without my phone
Taking my pet for a walk
Be present in your moment
It’s not about doing, it’s about being
Change happens in small increments
Burnout!!
Remote flexibility can lead to working more hours
Take time for recovery….sleep. This allows you to bounce back.
Restraint – Everything comes with a cost and a benefit
Seek and maintain a work life balance
Retrain your brain to focus and fight the distractions
Start small and short timeframes
Flow State
The sense of fluidity between your body and mind
Senses are heightened
Action and awareness sync to create an effortless momentum
Learn to relax the muscle
90 minutes of work, 20 minutes of recovery
Work it into your calendar
Hydrate, get something nutritious, walk
Be Authentic throughout your career
Reflect and be true to your own personality, values, and spirit
Regardless of the pressure that you’re under to act otherwise
