Your LinkedIn profile is the new resume. If you haven’t already done these five things, you’re just not competing as well as you could.
1) Create a great banner photo.
You don’t need to know how to use Photoshop to make a cover photo that stands out. Use a tool like Canva to tell a story. Include your name, your social media handles, and contact information in your cover photo.
2) Write a keyword-rich title.
Your title is the first thing recruiters read when they search for candidates. Include the title you’re applying for and your core competencies in the title to help me find you!
3) Feature your career highlights.
The “Featured” section needs to start a conversation. Give me something to reach out to you about. That might be your website, your projects, or your blog. Not your resume.
4) The “About” section is an extension of your title.
It’s not the most important piece of your profile, but a good “About” section engages recruiters and gives people a sense of your personality. One of my connections describes herself as “a software developer who likes pineapple on pizza.”
5) The “Experience” section needs to show career progression.
Tell me your responsibilities, but don’t leave it at that. Quantify your accomplishments so it reads like more than just a list of tasks.
